Our Story

About JM’s On The Water

JM’s On The Water was built from a longtime vision and a deep passion for the seafood industry. J.M., the founder, spent more than 30 years in the business with the dream of one day opening a seafood restaurant of his own. That dream became a reality with the creation of JM’s On The Water — a place built around fresh seafood, genuine hospitality, live music, and a love for the waterfront lifestyle.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Monty developed an early appreciation for business and the restaurant industry. Today, he serves as the General Manager of JM’s On The Water, helping carry the restaurant forward while honoring the vision that started it.

While J.M. now resides in Asheville, North Carolina, where he continues his passion for the seafood industry through Surf City Seafood, his vision remains at the heart of JM’s On The Water. Today, Monty, alongside Assistant General Manager Lucy Nestor-Dowling, helps lead the restaurant’s day-to-day operations with a dedicated and hardworking staff committed to creating the welcoming waterfront experience guests know and love.

The Meaning Behind the Name

What Does JM Mean?

The name JM comes from a family name shared across generations: Joseph Montgomery Moseley.

The first Joseph Montgomery Moseley was J.M.’s grandfather and Joe’s father, who also went by J.M.. Although he was never met by J.M. or Monty, the name continued through the family. Joe carried it as Joseph Montgomery Moseley II, J.M. as Joseph Montgomery Moseley III, and Monty carries it forward today as Joseph Montgomery Moseley IV.

For us, JM’s On The Water is more than a restaurant name — it represents family, tradition, and a shared connection to the seafood industry, hospitality, and the Surf City community.
